“Giving birth should be your greatest achievement, not your greatest fear.”
Jane Weideman
I am the proud doula of A Doula Matata birth services! I’ve had a big fascination with birth since I was just a little girl. I remember one point where I knew of so many friends and family members having babies and how excited I would be for updates but it seemed like every birth turned slightly negative at the end because of some complication or an unexpected C-section. Even as a teen I thought it shouldn’t be so common. This is what initially drove me to research. As I got older, and the more I learned, the more my passion grew. I learned things about the birth world that they don’t show you on television or sometimes you have never heard of even after having a baby. I learned about midwives, doulas, and this sisterhood of people all fighting for birth rights, empowerment for the mothers, and good outcomes for the babies. It was amazing and I knew I had to do something to help get all this wonderful information to expectant mothers. I believe that knowledge is your greatest weapon and that the role of the doula acts as your ammunition. Not only do you enter your pregnancy and birth feeling more educated and empowered, but you also have the support and confidence to advocate for yourself in the birth room.
My thoughts:
Regarding birth, a mother will hear “a healthy baby is all that matters” many times over. While this is the priority, it is not all that matters. How a mother feels, how confident she is in her decisions, how the mother and her support team interact, all of it matters very much. I believe that whether you have a home birth, hospital birth, or a birth you did not plan for that with the right support and knowledge you will always look back on the whole experience with positivity.
